2021 update: The pandemic and COVID-19 vaccines have created misinformation, confusion and controversy about the validity of vaccinations. This has caused millions to not wear face masks in public, thereby endangering those who are trying to protect themselves and others. Many not wearing face masks claim to have inherited immunity and so on. But they have no scientific documentation to back up their beliefs and claims.

On the other hand, flu' vaccination has become an increasing controversial topic. Should or should you not be getting flu' shots or coronavirus vaccine? We have been led to believe that vaccinations are a way to prevent the spread of infections and unnecessary deaths. New information is surfacing that challenges the traditional medical and public health vaccination dogma. Researchers claim that vaccinations, especially in babies and young children, create new health problems like autism and other auto-immune disorders. Numerous articles in the references section provide additional information. Hopefully this article will make you more informed and, in turn, help you to make an informed decision whether you and your loved ones should consider getting vaccinated. All of us have a moral obligation to protect others.

In the midst of all this confusion is missing information about how the flu' shot and coronavirus vaccine are made. The flu' shot has been made with eggs and added questionable chemicals that are dangerous and can be harmful [more information about this below].

Coronavirus vaccines are engineered more scientifically using a genetic process CRISPR that identifies the bad DNA causing coronavirus genes and replaces these DNA as cut-out snippets using no chemicals and is safe. The sequences contain snippets of DNA from viruses that have attacked human beings. These cut-out snippets are used by humans to detect and destroy DNA from similar viruses during subsequent attacks. The sequences play a key role in the human defense system, and form the basis of a technology known as CRISPR/Cas9 that effectively and specifically changes genes within viruses. This process also bolsters the immune system.

Coronavirus vaccines are safe to use but need to be adapted dosage wise to children, teens and all adults. "One shoe does not fit all!"

The question each fall has been whether or not to get flu' shots?  Now, there are more questions!

The federal government and the medical profession, using fear tactics, have strongly advocated getting everyone of all ages vaccinated.  But in the past 20 years many are challenging this health advice. Vaccination has now become a controversial issue!  Mercola: vaccines do not work  Swedish study vaccines brain damage is no longer active.  vaccine developer claims vaccine prevents abnormal pap-tests- not cervical-cancer  Prate: Mercury cover-up  Stone: Drug company schemes  Lydall: vaccine myths    Brownlee: Does vaccination matter  Beck: obesity - vaccines   Evans: flu shots ineffective 2011  Jefferson: review vaccine studies 2009   Adams: validity of vaccine science

The idea of vaccinations has been to stimulate the body's immune system to create resistance to a viral foreign object; a form of endowed immunity.

Do vaccines cause auto-immune diseases like autism and lupus? Are vaccines safe? Can vaccines cause lupus? These are just some of the many questions now being asked by parents and medical doctors. Public health measures have advocated vaccinations for over 200 years.  History vaccines: Timeline

"Every year, just prior to the impending "flu season," the CDC and their acquiescent media pawns terrorize the American public with false claims regarding annual flu deaths. The CDC boldly asserts that 36,000 people die every year from the flu. Such scare tactics are calculated to increase flu vaccine sales. However, according to the CDC's own official records documented in National Vital Statistics Reports, only a few hundred people die from influenza (flu) on an average year."   Miller: flu death big lie

Vaccinations have been recognized as a preventative measure while refusal to have vaccinations was perceived as contributing to spreading infections and diseases. But many medical doctors and researchers have observed vaccination links to Alzheimer's disease (AD), autism (ASD), hepatitis, asthma, diabetes 1, Gulf war syndrome, multiple sclerosis and suspected lupus. [ View the references below ] This article focuses on information not readily available about vaccines that may cause auto-immune disorders like autism and lupus in children and adults.

So ... do vaccines really work?

The New York Times had an article in the September 2, 2008, issue titled: "Doubts Grow Over Flu Vaccine in Elderly," which says, "The influenza vaccine, which has been strongly recommended for people over 65 for more than four decades, is losing its reputation as an effective way to ward off the virus in the elderly. A growing number of immunologists and epidemiologists say the vaccine probably does not work very well for people over 70; the group that accounts for three-fourths of all flu deaths." The article refers to a study done by the Group Health Center for Health Studies in Seattle on 3,500 people, age 65—94, to determine if flu vaccines are effective in protecting older people against developing pneumonia (Lancet 2008;372:398—405).  Miller D: Vit D instead of vaccines

October 25, 2011  Documents reveal that CDC officials were aware of Danish data, as far back as 2001, that indicated a connection between removing Thimerosal (49.55% mercury) and a decline in autism rates. Despite this knowledge, these officials allowed a 2003 article to be published in Pediatrics that excluded this information, misrepresented the decline as an increase, and led to the mistaken conclusion that Thimerosal in vaccines does not cause autism. In Denmark, Thimerosal, a controversial mercury compound used as a preservative in certain vaccines, was removed from all Danish vaccines in 1992.   CoMeD: scandal mercury-autism

A new study in September 23, 2011, has found that only half of all individuals affected with the flu virus actually get sick, highlighting the necessity of a powerful immune system that is able to respond to the flu virus appropriately. Gucciardi: immunity sys against flu

"There is also a lack of evidence that young children benefit from flu shots. A systematic review of 51 studies involving 260,000 children age 6 to 23 months found no evidence that the flu vaccine is any more effective than a placebo (Cochrane Database Syst Rev. 2006;1:CD004879)." Miller D: Vit D instead of vaccines

"The flu shot has been determined to be 1% effective – odds just about no one would go against if they were told upfront by their doctor. There is a noticeable lack of validation for just how effective the flu shot really is at creating a successful immunization. "  Evans: flu shots ineffective 2011  "Two separate reviews of medical data on the effectiveness of vaccinating people to prevent influenza showed there were no benefits to being vaccinated for the flu."   Article by Dearing: Med reviews flu shots ineffective is no longer active.

A review of numerous research done on effectiveness of vaccinations in the past showed that reliable evidence on influenza vaccines is thin and that there is evidence of widespread manipulation of conclusions and spurious notoriety of the studies. The vaccine situation can be illustrated by a short history of a young 22 year old woman, who at 15 years of age, was diagnosed with Systemic Lupus Erthematosus, or lupus SLE. Like most youngsters her age, she had numerous immunizations before and after her diagnosis. Her attending medical doctors continued to tell her and her parents that there was no known cause of lupus. The young girl's parents accepted the medical addict both that there was no known cause of lupus and that vaccinations should be continued for their daughter as her lupus condition made her a high risk for infections. Her parents trusted the medical information provided them as being sound and correct. Then, in 2009, the father began reading about research reports of vaccinations being linked to many auto-immune disorders and illnesses. He was devastated to learn that lupus may indeed be caused by contaminated vaccines.

Lupus recognized since 1948: "One of the best papers on systemic lupus erythematosusis is by Ayvazian and Badger (1948). They describe three cases of nurses who were literally vaccinated to death. The authors surveyed a group of 750 nurses who trained at a large municipal hospital between 1932 and 1946, and detailed the cases of three nurses who were vaccinated with a multitude of vaccines over a period of time and developed and succumbed to disseminated lupus erythematosus."  Read more about this bizarre incidence: Scheibner: adverse effects of vaccines

"Shocking was the information on April 25, 2011, that our own federal government conceded that vaccines can cause lupus!  USA Govt concedes vaccines cause lupus It took a lawsuit to confirm this reality. While this confirmation was good news, the federal government continues to insist that everyone should get vaccinations. This is speaking with "forked tongue!"

Indeed, the US federal government even passed legislation that recognizes that vaccinations may cause injury and that those injured need to be compensated, to help lessen the financial burden of the vaccination-injured person and his or her caregivers.  Marcarian: Law firm Such legislation is acceptance of guilt by our own government that vaccination may indeed cause serious injury.  Child Safety: USA Govt concedes vaccines cause lupus  Delp: vaccine safety

A nurse, Betty White, made a plea, in 1999, to the politicians in Washington to respond to the dysfunctional use of vaccines, especially in vaccinating newborns: "The CDC and FDA have no idea what the long term effects will be on the newly developing neurological and immune systems of the infants who are injected with this vaccine. They seem to only be concerned with denying the connection between these damaged children and the hepatitis B shot they received within a few hours of birth. The CDC even admits the lack of study and states they do not even know how long the vaccine will be effective. We found this amazing since the vaccine was developed for a population at risk for hepatitis B: IV drug users, high risk medical professionals and those who are involved in high risk sexual practices."  [ not children ] Article by White: Report to U.S. House of Representatives is no longer active.

You do not have to be a rocket scientist to realize that injecting foreign substances into the human body triggers a defensive immune response. This is the body's natural reaction to get rid of objects foreign to the human body. Such reactions cause inflammation and other fever reactions that, over an extended time, can illicit lupus and other auto-immune symptoms. In the case of poisonous substances like mercury, the reaction is a toxic one!  So where was common sense when the CDC and FDA approved using mercury, aluminum salts and other expicient ingredients in vaccines?

The truth is that vaccine policy is not about science or safety but about money and politics!

"We are all now [ 1999 ] faced with a moral dilemma: will we protect the “sacred cow of conventional vaccine philosophy” or will we stand up and speak out for the “health and well being of innocent children”? We choose children. We wonder, which will our government choose?" White: Report to U.S. House of Representative

Although European countries banned use of mercury in vaccines in 1980, "Eli Lilly in USA, stuck to its "scientific" facts, but the truth began slipping between the cracks in 1999. After the number of immunizations rose to 12 to 15 per child, the public finally became privy to the possible [accumulated] dangers of thimerosal [ a preservative ]. One 1999 study revealed that some infants, due to a genetic or developmental factor, lack the ability to eliminate mercury. Trace amounts of mercury in these infants, when accumulated over several vaccines, could pose a severe health risk. Some vaccines, such as vaccines for hepatitis B, contained as much as 12.5 micrograms of mercury per dose. That's more than 100 times the EPA's upper limit standard when administered to infants."  Prate: Mercury cover-up

This sudden awareness that there is a problem with vaccines has motivated the author to review the information about the linkage between vaccinations and lupus and other auto-immune disorders. Vaccination is such a vast topic that it is impossible to cover it completely in an article on a pro - con basis. And since most persons have had vaccinations imposed upon them from birth, most are aware of the benefits of vaccinations. But that vaccines may be bad is not as readily recognized. This article focuses on presenting this aspect of vaccination.

The research references below document that vaccinations have been linked to auto-immune disorders and illnesses throughout the world and that such evidence had been mounting for a long, long time.

 How Vaccines are Made

The simplified version of making vaccines is quoted from: Article by Blaylock: vaccines can kill you is no longer active.

"Basically, vaccines contain either killed viruses or bacteria, germ components, toxic extracts or live organisms that have been made less virulent--a process called attenuation. To stimulate an enhanced immune reaction against these organisms, manufacturers added powerful immune-stimulating substances such as squalene, aluminum, lipopolysacchride, etc.. These are called immune adjuvants.

The process of vaccination usually required repeated injections of the vaccine over a set period of time. The combination of adjuvants plus the intended organism triggers an immune response by the body, similar to that occurring with natural infections, except for one major difference. Almost none of these diseases enter the body by injection. Most enter by way of the mucous membranes of the nose, mouth, pulmonary passages or GI tract. For example, polio is known to enter via the GI tract. The membranes lining these passages contain a different immune system than activated by direct injection. This system is called the IgA immune system.

IgA is the first line of defense and helps reduce the need for intense activation of the body’s immune system. Often, the IgA system can completely head off an attack. The point being that injecting organisms to induce immunity is abnormal.

Because more and more reports are appearing citing vaccine failure, their manufacturers’ answer is to make the vaccines more potent. They do this by making the immune adjuvants more powerful or adding more of them. The problem with this approach is that in the very young, the nutritionally deficient and the aged, over-stimulating the immune system can have an opposite effect--it can paralyze the immune system."    Article by Blaylock: vaccines can kill you is no longer active.   Blaylock: what you don't know

 Immune system and Brain development
By Russell L. Blaylock MD

Natural exposure to infections is better for babies, children and adults than vaccinations. This is scientifically controversial, complex and difficult to understand process of early brain development. Brain development is a most complex process in babies and children. We turn to medical doctor and researcher, Russell Blaylock, Blaylock: danger excessive vaccinations to help explain how the brain develops normal immunity and how vaccinations affect such development.

Brain development has to do with T-helper lymphocyte [ cyte=cell; white blood cell ] [Th] functions and immunity. T helper cells, also known as Th cells, are a sub-group of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell, that play an important role in establishing and maximizing the capabilities of the immune system. These cells are unusual in that they have no cytotoxic [ white blood cells kill cells that are infected with viruses (or other pathogens), or are otherwise damaged or dysfunctional ] or phagocytic activity; they cannot kill infected host cells or pathogens. Rather, these cells provide signals for orchestrating the immune response. Th cells are involved in activating and directing other immune cells and are particularly important in the immune system. They are essential in determining B cell antibody class switching, in the activation and growth of cytotoxic T cells, and in maximizing bactericidal activity of phagocytes such as macrophages. It is this diversity in function and their role in influencing other cells that gives T helper cells their name. Wiki: T-helper cells

"The immune system’s reaction to infection and immunization can be quite different. These variable differences in T-helper lymphocytes (Th) can exist as Th1, Th0, or Th2 forms:

Th0 When there is no infection, the immune system is in an uncommitted phase.
Th1 If a virus invades, the T-helper lymphocytes quickly switch to the Th1 phase—allowing immune cells to secrete a group of cytokines that kill viruses. This Th1 phase also activates immune lymphocytes that kill viruses and bacteria.
Th2 This phase in general reduces immune reaction and favors the production of antibodies mainly supplied by B-cells. At other times, th immune system needs an entirely different set of immune signals and cells that are supplied by the Th2 phase.

Lets look at these Th shifts in more detail: Normally the immune system relies on a shifting of T-lymphocyte functions to determine which is better for the particular situation. Things that suppress a portion of the immune system, usually cellular type immunity, increase the likelihood of autoimmunity. Immunologists speak about immunity in terms of Th1 to Th2 shift and vice versa. This can occur with exposure to mercury as well as in response to vaccination. A great number of autoimmune diseases are associated with a Th2 shift.

Vaccinations do not have the same effect on the immune system as naturally acquired diseases do. They stimulate predominantly the Th2 part of this system and not Th1. Over-stimulation of Th2 causes autoimmune diseases. The cellular Th1 side thwarts cancer, and if it does not become fully developed in childhood, a person can be more prone to have cancer as an adult."  Article by Blaylock: danger excessive vaccinations is no longer active.

The immune system is a very complex system that is incompletely formed at birth. This means, as has been confirmed in both animal and human studies, that the manner in which the immune system reacts to vaccinations differs according to age; so that small babies have a different reaction than adults. This has been shown with the hepatitis B vaccine now given to new-borns. The rate of maturation of the immune system also differs considerably among babies and children, meaning we cannot say what effect will occur in all children. There are a great many variables, including diet.

Infants remain in the Th2 mode during intrauterine life as a part of nature’s immune-cloaking to prevent the fetus from be-ing immunologically rejected by the mother during pregnancy (much like transplant rejection), since, if seen by the mother’s immune system, the baby would be recognized as a foreign body. Upon birth, expecting to receive the needed antibodies from its mother’s breast milk, the baby continues to remain primarily in a Th2 mode, but has a limited ability to switch to the Th1 defensive mode should the need arise—perhaps as the result of an infection. Months later the baby’s tertiary immune system begins to switch to the adult primarily Th1 mode. If the baby’s immune system remains in a Th2 mode for too long, it will exhibit a higher risk of developing an autoimmune disorder, such as eczema, asthma, or other allergies.

Presently [ 2008 ], vaccine authorities recommend every baby be vaccinated with the Hepatitis B vaccine (HepB) at birth. But, is this safe? A recent study looked at the immune reaction in new-born infants up to the age of one year who had received the HepB vaccine to see if their immune reaction differed from that of adults getting the same vaccine [27]. The study found that infants, even after age one year, reacted differently than adults. HepB antibody levels of infants were substantially higher (about 3-fold) than those of the adults and HepB levels in infants remained higher throughout the study. In essence, babies responded to the vaccine by having an intense Th2 response that persisted long after it should have disappeared—a completely abnormal response.

The immune system quickly clears a natural infection and then shuts off the immune activation, thus allowing repair of what damage was done [ approximately 6 months ]. This shutting down of the microglia is very important. By contrast, there is evidence that with repeated and excessive vaccine-triggered immune stimulation, the microglia do not shut down.

Autistic and other autoimmune children have been described as having a Th2 pre-dominance, which would explain their propensity to develop autoimmune diseases and to be more susceptible to infections early in life."   Article by Blaylock: danger excessive vaccinations is no longer active.

What causes vaccines to be bad for humans?

Vaccines would be much safer if some ingredients like mercury and aluminum were not included in the make-up of the vaccines. Indeed, the federal government has prohibited drug companies from using mercury by-products since 2000. So it is not that the notion of vaccination is bad but that some vaccines have impurities that are bad. Eliminate these poisonous impurities and the vaccines would be much safer.

Getting too many vaccinations in a short period of time may also cause accumulation of aggravating ingredients, thereby triggering an auto-immune reaction. "It is vital that anyone scheduled for vaccination follow a schedule that allows no more than one vaccine every six months, allowing the immune system time to recover."   Blaylock: vaccines can kill you When several vaccines are administered together, or in close succession, their interaction may completely overwhelm your child's developing immune system.

Children under the age of six have natural massive brain growth, making their brains super sensitive to foreign objects like thimerosal [ mercury ] in vaccines. Thimerosal is deposited in the fatty tissue of the brain during a time when the developing brain is growing rapidly and is super sensitive.

Another possibility causing vaccination to be bad for some may be biochemical individuality. Some persons may have a genetic make-up that causes them to be more sensitive and react badly to the some vaccines. Such individuality may be triggered by malnutrition.

Persons suffering from poor nutrition are more sensitive to vaccinations.

"Vaccinations do not have the same effect on the immune system as naturally acquired diseases do. They stimulate predominantly the Th2 part of this system and not Th1.  Ingredients in Vaccines

Vaccines contain a number of substances which can be divided into the following groups:  Article by Scheibner: Tissue Fixatives In Vaccines is no longer active.

Micro-organisms, either bacteria or viruses, thought to be causing certain infectious diseases and which the vaccine is supposed to prevent. These are whole-cell proteins or just the broken-cell protein envelopes, and are called antigens.
Chemical substances which are supposed to enhance the immune response to the vaccine, called adjuvants.
Chemical substances which act as preservatives and tissue fixatives, which are supposed to halt any further chemical reactions and putrefaction (decomposition or multiplication) of the live or attenuated (or killed) biological constituents of the vaccine.
  • Mercury or thimerosal is the most toxic poison to brain cells.  Haley: mercury-autism link

Vaccine ingredients:  All these constituents of vaccines are toxic, and their toxicity may vary, as a rule, from one batch of vaccine to another.  Article by Scheibner: Tissue Fixatives In Vaccines is no longer active.  Delp: vaccine safety

Just what are the ingredients in different vaccines? The ingredient Mercury/ thimerosal is the most dangerous because it is deposited in the fatty tissues of the brain. Below is an example of the ingredients found in one flu vaccine.  The general short list above and more detailed example below can be viewed for more USA vaccines and their impurities in a Communicable Disease Center [ CDC] table:  CDC: vaccine ingredientse.g.:

Vit D and Flu:

Flu is a vitamin D deficiency disease

Vaccinations have been prescribed as a preventive approach to fighting influenza and other communicable illnesses. Such claims have neglected medical science stating that the body has the immune ability to fight infections. To do so the body needs a balance of sufficient nutrients and not foreign vaccines. Vitamin D is one of these essential nutrients that, in sufficient amount, is mother nature's vaccine; but when deficient, causes predisposition to infection.

Researchers have neglected to evaluate their subjects for vitamin D, vitamin C and other co-factor nutrients that are known to bolster immunity.  This makes most of their studies flawed as most vaccination studies neglected to account for the nutritional status before, during and after their research studies.

Researchers have found that high doses of vitamin D supplements have helped fight off flu infections. Cannell: Flu & vit D  Donald Miller, medical doctor and professor at University of Washington, advices taking Vit D instead of flu' shots.  Miller D: Vit D instead of vaccines    "An interventional study showed that vitamin D reduces the incidence of respiratory infections in children.  "Vit D and flu Report Summary Testimonial that vitamin D stopped influenza

Vit D & Lupus: Lupus patients are rightfully told to avoid the sun since it can flare the disease. But guess what... by doing so lupus patients are setting themselves up for Vit D deficiency and thereby lowering their natural immune system.  Cooper Kamen: vit def in SLE     Article by Soram: vit D def & lupus is no longer active.   Weaver: Vit D def & lupus

Researchers at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston  Weatherby: Vit D linked to lupus knew that evidence from animal and clinical studies suggested that vitamin D inadequacies played a factor in other autoimmune diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and type-1 diabetes), but this possible connection had never been well-studied in lupus.

After comparing vitamin D levels in 123 people with lupus and 240 healthy controls they detected statistically significant trend toward lower vitamin D levels in Caucasian lupus patients. Specifically, 67 percent of the lupus patients were vitamin D deficient, with African Americans showing about half as much (15.9 ng/ml) compared to Caucasians (31.3 ng/ml). As the Carolina team said (Kamen DL et al 2005), “These results suggest vitamin D deficiency as a possible risk factor for SLE [lupus] ...”  Weatherby: Vit D linked to lupus

Is having many vaccine shots safe?  By the time a child starts school he or she will have received more than 36 injections, including four doses each of vaccines for Hemophilus influenzae type b infections, diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis -- all of them given during the first 12 months of life.  This is a very large dose of vaccines for young developing children. Dr. Miller recommends that the vaccination number be much smaller for children.  Miller D: Vit D instead of vaccines

 Vaccines and autism:

There is a link between mercury used in vaccines and autism. Boyd Haley, Ph.D., a biochemist at the University of Kentucky, one of the world's top experts on mercury toxicity, states that thimerosal in vaccines damages the brain in children under age of six and that this, in turn, causes autism.  The evidence is indisputable! Haley: mercury-autism link

Conclusion:  The author's intent was to collate documented information about auto-immune disorders, like lupus, that are linked to vaccination in one web-site so you, the reader, could have an instant source of information, save time and become informed about vaccinations and lupus. The above information about vaccination and lupus is limited, but it opens the door for the reader to explore more articles in the references below.

The best immunity is the natural one attained when humans are exposed to infections and diseases. Natural immunity triggers the body processes compatible to the body. By contrast, vaccinations impose external immunity that is alien to the body and that the body tends to reject.

The most important point about vaccines is that these be free from poisonous - allergic ingredients. Everyone should insist for valid evidence about the ingredients in vaccines before subjecting to vaccinations. Ask why the identified poisonous ingredients are needed and is there a safer alternative vaccine! Do not let fear tactics scare you into getting flu shots!  Miller: flu death big lie Finally, it is vital that anyone undergoing vaccination should start nutritional supplementation and adhere to a healthy diet before vaccination occurs. Vaccine complications are far fewer in individuals with good nutrition. Blaylock: what you don't know

Abstract: "Vaccination has been perhaps the most important achievement in medicine of the last century. A hoard of infectious diseases that used to claim the lives of many, especially children, have been prevented and some even eradicated. However, it is possible that within this gift there is hidden a ‘Trojan Horse’. During the last decade increasing numbers of reports regarding possible autoimmune side effects of vaccination, have been published. The existing data does not link the vaccines and the autoimmune phenomena observed in a causal relationship, nevertheless a temporal connection has been described. In this article we wish to address in particular the possible link between vaccines andsystemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), namely two aspects of this inter-relationship: the occurrence of SLE following vaccination and outcome of immunization of known SLE patients."

The original research data was claimed later to be lost and hence, no decision was made at this time about a vaccine policy using mercury in vaccines. This was a true cover-up about the dangers of vaccines by government officials.

"International team of researchers who have combed through hundreds of flu-vaccine studies. The vast majority of the studies were deeply flawed, says Jefferson. “Rubbish is not a scientific term, but I think it’s the term that applies.” Only four studies were properly designed to pin down the effectiveness of flu vaccine, he says, and two of those showed that it might be effective in certain groups of patients, such as school-age children with no underlying health issues like asthma. The other two showed equivocal results or no benefit. Flu researchers have been fooled into thinking vaccine is more effective than the data suggest, in part, says Jefferson, by the imprecision of the statistics."

Abstract: Low vitamin D levels have been found in patients with autoimmune diseases, including type I diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis and systemic lupus erythematosus. The main source of vitamin D is exposure to sunlight, but the same solar radiation is known to exacerbate lupus erythematosus. We investigated the prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency in patients with cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE). We designed a cross-sectional study including 55 patients with CLE to measure their serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) by chemiluminescence immunoassay and compare it with a control group consisting of 37 healthy sex and age-matched subjects recruited from the patients’ relatives as well as healthcare workers. Correlations with clinical and demographic variables were determined. Approximately 95% of patients with CLE had less than 30 ng/ml of serum 25(OH)D, which is accepted as the lower limit for vitamin D adequacy. Mean serum vitamin D values were significantly lower than controls (p = 0.038) and were associated with higher levels of parathyroid hormone (p = 0.050). A history of CLE was a strong predictor of insufficiency of vitamin D (odds ratio 4.2; 95% confidence interval 1.0—17.4). The results suggest a role of CLE in the metabolism of the vitamin and provide guidance for future studies looking at a potential role for vitamin D in the prevention and treatment of CLE. "Did you know that there exists a government agency whose sole purpose is to review claims of vaccine injury and give awards based on those injuries? The government agency was created in 1986 as an alternative to suing doctors and manufacturers. Are you wondering why the government would do such a thing? The answer is simple: while vaccines are in the best interest of overall public health, they are not 100% risk free. They don't want doctors and manufacturers getting sued to provide something that is clearly in the interest of the general population. If they got sued, then it is likely they would pull their vaccines. However, as a parent, it is frightening to think that injuries are abundant enough that there exists an injury compensation program. The program covers any individual or combination of vaccines that are regularly recommended throughout childhood."

Vaccination against hepatitis B is associated with a 1.6 fold increase in the risk of developing lupus erythematosus, an analysis of the UK General Practice Research Database (GPRD) has revealed.

The study by French and Dutch researchers found that among people aged over 40, lupus risk was elevated 2.6-fold by the vaccine.

The analysis was prompted by 274 reports to the French pharmacovigilance system of autoimmune disorders associated with hepatitis B vaccination - including 32 reports of lupus.

Since the drug’s introduction in 2006, the public has been learning many of these facts the hard way. To date, 15,037 girls have officially reported adverse side effects from Gardasil to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS). These adverse reactions include Guilliane Barre, lupus, seizures, paralysis, blood clots, brain inflammation and many others. The CDC acknowledges that there have been 44 reported deaths.

Our study reviewed the clinical histories of 55 patients with bone densitometry and serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) who attended our clinic between January 2007 and December 2009. We used the same references as in Toloza et al.’s paper to define osteopenia and osteoporosis and suboptimal and deficient levels of vitamin D. Demographic and clinical characteristic are shown in Table 1.

In our study 85.5% of the patients showed sub-optimal levels of vitamin D (<30 ng/ml) compared with 66.7% of women with SLE in Toloza et al.’s study.

Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have multiple hypergammaglobulinemia, increased production of autoantibodies, and T cell dysfunction with abnormal cytokine.

It has been suggested that all these immunological changes are due to a defect in eliminating self/reactive T cells or B cells.

In 1976, the National Influenza Immunization Program in the US caused clinicians to reexamine the possible benefits and risks of influenza vaccination in patients with SLE.

Because viral infection has long been postulated to play a role in autoimmune disease, rheumatologists believed that vaccination in patients with SLE might trigger autoantibody production or increase disease activity.

The objective of this article is to identify common and atypical features of systemic lupus erythematosus diagnosed following hepatitis B vaccination. We analyzed retrospectively the medical records of 10 systemic lupus erythematosus patients from different centers, who developed the disease following hepatitis B vaccination and determined the prevalence of different manifestations and the time association to vaccination. In this case series, 80% of the patients were female, mean age 35 ± 9 years, of which 20% received one inoculation, 20% received two doses and 60% received all three inoculations. The mean latency period from the first hepatitis B virus immunization and onset of autoimmune symptoms was 56.3 days. All patients were diagnosed with systemic lupus erythematosus, according to the American College of Rheumatology revised criteria within 1 year. The prevalence of some systemic lupus erythematosus manifestations was typical and included involvement of the joints (100%), skin (80%), muscles (60%) and photosensitivity (30%). Other symptoms differed in this unique group of systemic lupus erythematosus patients such as low rate of kidney and hematologic involvement, and a relatively high rate of hepatitis (20%). Neurological (80%) and pulmonary (70%) symptoms were also common in this group. Data from this case-series, and previously documented cases in the literature could only show a temporal relation between hepatitis B vaccination and the appearance of systemic lupus erythematosus. Systemic lupus erythematosus related to vaccine may differ from idiopathic systemic lupus erythematosus in its clinical presentation and may resemble drug-induced systemic lupus erythematosus. Thus, physicians should be alerted to this potential association, its possible long latency period and unique presentations, and be encouraged to report and analyze these cases. Abstract: Environmental factors are capable of triggering the expression of human endogenous retroviruses and induce an autoimmune response. Infection can promote the expression of human endogenous retroviruses by molecular mimicry or by functional mimicry. There are additional mechanisms which may control the expression of human endogenous retroviruses, such as epigenetic status of the genome (hypomethylation, histone deacetylation). Ultraviolet exposure, chemicals/drugs, injury/stress, hormones, all as a single cause or in a concert, may modulate the involvement of human endogenous retroviruses in pathogenic processes. In the current review we summarize the current knowledge on infections, molecular mimicry, cross-reactivity and epigenetics contribution for trigger human endogenous retroviruses expression and pathogenesis in lupus patients. Abstract:Concerns regarding the safety and efficacy of immunization in patients with SLE have persisted for over 60 years, despite the increased risk of infection in these patients. There are many anecdotal case reports of SLE induction or exacerbation following immunization, but overall, these events seem to be very rare. Evidence from prospective trials suggests that inactivated and component vaccines are probably safe in patients with SLE. Live vaccines are contraindicated in patients on immunosuppressive agents or high dose steroids (prednisone 20 mg/day or greater).

There is limited evidence regarding efficacy of vaccination in patients with SLE. Studies assessing serological response to vaccination have generally shown that the majority of patients have an appropriate response, but a significant minority do not. Response to hepatitis B vaccination may be impaired and serological responses should be assessed post vaccination. It is not clear if disease activity or immunosuppressive medications are risk factors for a poor response, rather than intrinsic abnormalities of immune function in patients with SLE. The majority of patients appear to have a reasonable serological response to vaccination.

Some investigators have observed that certain patients who received tetanus or flu vaccines, for example, also made antibodies to DNA or other lupus autoantigens. It seems that flu vaccines do not work as well if the patient has SLE ; Antibodies achieve only half the desired levels for half as long. Additionally, up to 20% of those with SLE may feel sick or achy for a few days, which is double the incidence in the general population.  Excerpt from book August 13, 2009
